It's Finally Fall: Five Things to Do When the Vegas Heat Lifts

October 23, 2008

It's October in Vegas, so enjoy the three to four weeks of fall while we have it. Make sure you squeeze in at least one of these activities before the winter winds blow through town.

1.    Take in a Rebel Football game. Support the home team down at Sam Boyd Stadium. Even if you're kids are too young to understand the intricacies of the game strategy, they love the uniforms, the cheerleaders, and the food (popcorn and lemonade anyone?). If you get a group of 10 or more together, you can qualify a group discount.

2.    Ride a bike. It sounds simple, but if you've survived a Vegas summer, you'll know that hitting the road after 8 a.m. between May and Sept. is pretty darn hot. So, take advantage of the nice day, don your helmets and start pedaling!

3.    Pick your pumpkin (or apples, or veggies) at Gilcrease Orchard. A popular field trip destination, you can show your kids that produce doesn't really come from the grocery store. Be sure to check their website before you go to see what's available for the picking.

4.    Go to a cultural festival. Whether you want Greek, Italian, or Hawaiian, the fall is the best time to catch the area's food and cultural festivals. Grab a gyro, slurp your spaghetti, or slice your Spam and take in some great fun here in town.

5.    Have fun at First Friday. This monthly art festival brings residents to the downtown arts district for special gallery exhibits, performances and great food. It happens every month, but the milder months make it great for the kids (Who wants to take coats on and off every time you move from gallery to gallery?). It's a colorful experience that's sure to spark the imagination.

Great tips. I hadn't heard of Gilcrease Orchard. We'll have to check it out.
