Lions, tigers and bears, oh my! Child-appropriate wildlife in Sin City

September 25, 2008

Most folks think Vegas is strictly an adult destination. Well, there is some pretty interesting wildlife in this city, but if you're looking for some party animals of the more traditional furry, hairy, and scaly kind, then check out some of these hot spots.

Exotic Pets
Yes, this is a pet store. Believe it or not, they have more biodiversity in this shop than you'll find in some zoos. They're known for their reptile collections bearded dragons, Standing's day geckos, and Burmese pythons are regulars and you can even feast your eyes on larger specimens like monitor lizards and caimans. If you prefer more legs, they have lots of insects, but don't worry, the spiders, beetles and such are well secured. (After all, they are for sale). Looking for something a little more cute and furry? Check out the assortment of rabbits, hamsters and even a sugar glider or two.  Although the owner is happy to take your cash for his collection, there's no pressure to buy and he and his staff love to show the critters off for free.

Gilcrease Bird Sanctuary
Here's another freebie for ya.  The Gilcrease Bird Sanctuary opened its doors more than 40 years ago in what was then a fairly desolate agcricultural area of northwest Las Vegas. Over the years, owner William Gilcrease and his family and followers have taken in native and exotic species. Stop in and take a stroll on the nature walk where you'll see large birds like ostrich and emus and smaller species like parrots and lovebirds. It's not all for the birds, though. You'll see some non-feathered friends like iguanas, water turtles, tortoises, and assorted farm animals. Admission for adults is $5 and children under 12 get in for only $1 each.

Shark Reef at Mandalay Bay
If you're willing to brave the Strip (a relatively manageable trip on a weekday), head down to Mandalay Bay's Shark Reef Aquarium. You'll find water-bound creatures from fresh and salt-water all over the world. They have a great audio tour that's perfect for the age 4-and-above-attention span. If you've got a littler one, the visuals are entertaining enough and kids of all ages will love the touch pool stocked with rays and horseshoe crabs. This is a spendier stop, with adult admission at $16.95 and kids (12 and younger) admission at  $10.95. The bright side is that there is a locals discount and kids four and younger are free.
