Planes, trains and automobiles: things that go vroom!

September 25, 2008

Vegas is a city that moves. If you're looking to get your toddler (or preschooler) into motion, check out some of these top transportation tips:

McCarran Airport
One of the busiest airports in the country, McCarran International Airport handles nearly 4 million passengers each month. That's a lot of planes. If you want to get a closer look, drive over to the parking area on the south side of the airport (it's off Sunset Road in between Eastern Avenue and Paradise Road). You can sit in the car or stand at the fence and watch the planes come in and take off. If your kids are really into planes, pick up a copy of an airplane book from your local library (like this one) and figure out the make and model of the planes as they land. Does your little one have a big imagination? Guess where it's come from or headed to. You can even make up stories about the people on the planes.

Nevada State Railway Museum
If you're looking to get your kid to let off some steam, head down to the Nevada State Railway Museum where he or she can see some of the oldest rails in the state and take a ride in heated/air conditioned comfort. This is a weekend trip, though, as the trains only run Saturdays and Sundays. Be sure to check their Web site for the latest schedules and rates and to print your coupon before your visit.

Las Vegas Motor Speedway
If little John or Jane is hot into the NASCAR craze, you've probably already made a stop at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway.  With four tracks, you can watch traditional circular races, drag races, and even a dirt track. Get close to the drivers and the off-track entertainment in the Neon Garage at the annual NASCAR Weekend. They also have a fun mascot, Pit Boss, who appears at many of the events to entertain the kids.
