Wednesday Reads: Little Pea

January 07, 2009

What would happen if all your parents ever served for dinner was candy? Night after night? Red candy. Orange candy. Rainbow-striped candy. Candy. Candy. Candy. Do ya think it would get to be a bit boring?

Well imagine if you were a little pea and your mamma pea and papa pea made you eat your candy EVERY night.

Yes, it's as ludicrous as you imagine. And totally hilarious, especially to a preschooler who hates eating his or her veggies.

Little Pea by Amy Krouse Rosenthal and Jen Corace is a great introduction to satire and farce for kids. They pick it up quickly and their imaginations can run totally wild with it.

My mom bought our daughter this book when she was about three and two years later, it's still a favorite. From the sweet and playful prose to the simple, yet charming illustrations, this book pulls kids in and focuses their attention on the important message...if you eat your candy for dinner, you'll get spinach for dessert. A great idea for a little pea who loves spinach and a solid message for kids who need to eat their spinach before they get candy.
