Paradise - it's not just a Vegas strip club.

November 12, 2008

Business Week is out with their "Best Places to Raise Your Kids" list. As I clicked through their clunky slideshow, expecting to see a northern Nevada burg listed, if the Silver State was represented at all. Sure enough, we did make the list, and much to my surprise, a Vegas burb made the list.

Granted, most folks have never heard of Paradise. If you ask Vegasites to list the suburbs here, you're sure to get the gated standbys - Alliante, Green Valley, Summerlin, Centennial, Spanish Trail, Mountain's Edge. You may get some old school references from natives like my Homer - Charleston Heights, for example.

And the winning sleeper is Paradise. No Paradise does not have a mayor. It's a part of unincorporated Clark County even though residents sport a Las Vegas address. Here's a little bit about this 'hood a few miles away from mine (Spring Valley - which was a close runner up along with Sunrise Manor.) It's a very blue collar neighborhood that supports the casino industry it surrounds. The area also includes UNLV and some of the neat ranch-style homes just east of the campus.

I am sure my neighbors toward the outskirts of town will argue that their villages rock. Bring it on. What do you like about your neighborhood. Why should it have made the list?
